MFT’s
moving to Quebec & The Maritimes
QUEBEC
If you are planning to practice in Quebec,
you can become licensed as an MFT if you meet the requirements
of the OPTSQ,
which are similar to the requirements of becoming a clinical
member of the AAMFT. To be licensed and eligible for third
party reimbursement, you will have to pass a French proficiency
test. Most people who are not fluently bilingual find it
extremely helpful to receive tutoring in French prior to
the test.
You can practice in Quebec with out an MFT license, but
this means that you will not be able to seek reimbursement
from a clients' insurance company. Not all employees have
supplemental insurance that covers mental health treatment,
and the plans that do have mental health benefits cover
on average $300-500 per year. Be aware that not all plans
do reimburse for treatment with an MFT. If you decide to
not seek MFT licensure, you will need to purchase your
own liability insurance.
MARITIMES
At present, none of the Maritime Provinces have designated
MFT licenses. This means that you will not be eligible
for third party reimbursement unless your work is being “signed
off on” by a mental health professional with licensure
such as a psychologist. Please check the websites
of each of the provinces for more specific information.
